沉醉於《蒂凡尼早餐》:自由還是愛情價更高?
這是我心底反覆播放的一幕:鏡頭緩緩展開,書桌下散落著揉皺的草稿,像秋日落葉鋪滿地面。「啪嗒、啪嗒⋯⋯」打字機清脆的聲響在靜謐中盪開,鍵盤起伏間,白紙上漸漸浮現兩行文字:
"There was once a very lovely, very frightened girl. She lives alone except for a nameless cat."
這位失意男作家只打了兩行字,思緒又被窗外傳來的結他聲輕輕勾走。
"Moon River, wider than a mile. I'm crossing you in style some day..." 創作靈感雖被打斷,他卻不由自主沉醉於歌聲中。或許因為他聽出來了,那唱的不只是一首歌,更是歌者自己的故事。
他探頭出窗外望,就見她一個人坐在窗台上。她沒有察覺樓上凝視的目光,繼續撥著結他弦輕唱;他面帶微笑,靜靜地當上她的聽眾。歌曲完結後,二人終於對上眼,Audrey Hepburn露出溫柔笑容,輕輕一聲:「Hi.」
這套戲我只看過一次,但好多場景都深印腦海:從經典開場赫本那一襲黑裙,站在Tiffany’s門前啃麵包,到最後兩人在雨中尋貓那幕。
"A nameless cat"的由來,是女主角始終不願為貓改名,她怕一旦起了名字,彼此就會建立牽絆,分開時只會更加痛苦。她多次強調:"We belong to nobody."
儘管劇情老土,荷里活式的大團圓結局過份美化The power of love,但我還是很喜歡這部電影。喜歡當中的淡然哀愁,喜歡困在世俗與夢想之間的掙扎感,更喜歡結局「以卵擊石」的樂觀。
相比之下Truman Capote的原著就現實得多,女主角終究是個不能馴服的wild thing,不甘困在籠子裏,選擇離開,投奔自由。比起電影的「大團圓」,原著結局可能更幸福。兩個身無分文、孤單的靈魂因為經歷相近而走在一起,但現實的殘酷早晚會迫使他們認命,這是否單靠愛情的力量就足夠面對呢?
男主角跟女主角有以下一段對話:
"Okay, life's a fact, people do fall in love, people do belong to each other, because that's the only chance anybody's got for real happiness. You call yourself a free spirit, a wild thing, and you're terrified somebody's going to stick you in a cage. Well, baby, you're already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it's not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somaliland. It's wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself."
我想起了Desperado的歌詞:
"And freedom, oh, freedom. Well that's just some people talking. Your prison is walking through this world all alone."
亡命之徒注定要浪跡天涯,不能停下來。就算能把人留下,心還是留不下。一旦心留下了,他就不能再稱為亡命之徒,相等於捨棄自己的身份。
"You better let somebody love you. (Let somebody love you). You better let somebody love you. Before it's too late....." 這段旋律,一直在我腦海裏縈繞不散。
